Many people find that they would like to extend their
eyelashes, or make them thicker and fuller. There are many techniques used in
order to forward this aim. It is possible to receive semi permanent eyelash
extensions, use makeup (such as mascara), or even have surgical eyelash
implants. These implants amount to having new, permanent eyelashes placed on
the upper eyelid. While some people really enjoy the results of this procedure,
others find the thought of surgery so close to the eye and its inherent dangers
too difficult to face.
Asians especially choose permanent eyelash implants, as they
generally have less hair, and their eyelashes are usually relatively short.
However, this procedure is on the rise in Caucasians as well, as more people
search for ways to make beauty enhancements permanent. Receiving lash implants
is considered cosmetic surgery, so it is not likely that you will be able to
have your insurance company pay for the procedure. The procedure is fairly
common in Korea and Japan, although it is also available in the United States.
Permanent eyelash implants are in reality a transplant
surgery. A graft is taken from the back of the neck. The hairs are then plucked
out of the graft, individually, and trimmed of excess dermis, epidermis, and
fat. Each hair is individually placed into the upper eyelid. As many as 50 or
60 hairs may be needed to successfully complete the procedure and fill out the
eyelashes. Local anesthetic is used for the procedure, and safety precautions,
such as eye shields, are also used to protect the eye from damage. After the
surgery (which takes about an hour), it is important to note that you will have
to trim your new lashes, as the new hairs will grow faster than your natural
eyelashes.
Even though many people are looking for more permanent
makeup solutions, there are some who are uncomfortable with the idea of
unnecessary surgery. As with any surgery, there is the possibility of
complications with permanent eyelash implants, and you risk damage to your eye,
despite safety precautions taken by the surgeon. Additionally, as with most
types of cosmetic surgery, eyelash implants can be expensive.
For those who desire a procedure that does not include a
knife, and probably costs less, semi permanent eyelash extensions are
available. These extensions are adhered directly onto the lash, and produce
much the same effect (or better, since the extensions have curl to them) as implants.
But they are painless, and you do not have to worry about the problems that can
be associated with surgery. Additionally, because they are resistant to tears,
sweat, sun, and even water (such as showering or swimming), they can last more
than two months with proper care.
Today’s technology and abilities make it possible to enhance
beauty, including that of the eyes, through various means. However, even though
permanent eyelash implant surgery is an option, it is not necessary, and there
are other ways to achieve the same results with out taking the same risks.
